Progress Portfolio

header3.gif (4206 bytes)

Like traditional paper-based portfolios, the Progress Portfolio software application helps students document and reflect on what they are learning. However, rather than only documenting finished pieces, the Progress Portfolio is used through the duration of an investigation so that students can document the progress of their reasoning and investigative activities.

The Progress Portfolio allows students to document and reflect on their work using an integrated suite of screen capture, annotation, organization, and presentation tools. In addition, teachers can guide students in their work with the Progress Portfolio through the design of prompts and templates that encourage students to think about key issues as they work.

Click on the the graphic to go to the Progress Portfolio Project Site, where you'll find more information about the software and its use. You can also download the program from there.

Create-a-WorldIn Create-a-World, students create a portfolio to track their hypotheses and supporting or discounting evidence for factors that affect variation in Earth’s surface temperature. Here, a team has generated its own predictions for the Earth’s surface temperature and compared those to visualizations of actual surface temperature.
The Struggle for SurvivalIn Struggle for Survival, students create a portfolio to track their hypotheses and evidence for what caused some finches on the Galapagos Islands to survive and some to die. Here, a team has generated and captured evidence to support a hypothesis about bird beak length as a factor in the finch’s survival.
Earth StructuresIn Earth Structures and Processes, students create a portfolio to track their hypotheses regarding and evidence for tectonic plate boundaries and movement. Here, a team has generated and captured earthquake data they believe explains a particular plate boundary.
